SOCAN’s Ashland Climate Action Team meets monthly on the first Thursday at 6pm at the Ashland Public Library.

And on July 29th, the monthly meeting will be:

“How Climate Science Divides Us: Social Dimensions of Climate Change Mitigation”.

There is an abundance of scientific evidence confirming the reality of human-induced global warming and its impacts. And what is needed to divert the current trajectory which threatens life on the planet is also known.

Given this evidence, there is frustration and disappointment among climate scientists and activists about the lack of progress.

Dr Rob Winthrop, a member of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Maryland will discuss how climate change is a social problem with profound environmental consequences, and how some solutions can lack social salience and fail to build consensus.

However, encouraging social mobilization for a climate-positive future around shared goals and pursuing climate action as a co-benefit of other socially desired goals may be the needed shift in focus.

This thought-provoking SOCAN program will take place on Tuesday July 29th from 6:00 to 7:30 pm at the Medford Public Library, 205 South Central Avenue, Medford. There is no charge for attending SOCAN events.
